The 2025 ABSA Cup has received a major financial boost, with prize money for the winners increasing to K1 million, up from K800,000 in 2024. The runners-up will now pocket K400,000, an increase from last year’s K350,000. This significant investment by Absa Bank Zambia PLC underscores the growing prestige of Zambia’s premier knockout competition.
Along with the prize money increase, the 2025 edition will maintain its expanded format of 21 teams, featuring 10 provincial teams, seven MTN Super League teams, and four ZPL National League teams. This new structure, approved by FAZ and Absa Bank Zambia PLC, aims to enhance competition and provide opportunities for lower-tier teams.
With match-ups now confirmed, teams are set to battle for supremacy, starting with the preliminary round on March 15-16, followed by the Round of 16 on April 5-6.
ABSA Bank Zambia PLC Increases Sponsorship to K6.5 Million
Absa Bank Zambia PLC Managing Director Mizinga Melu announced a K1 million increase in the tournament’s total sponsorship, bringing it to K6.5 million, up from K5.5 million in 2024. This increase highlights Absa’s commitment to developing Zambian football and ensuring a more competitive and rewarding tournament.
In addition to prize money, the travel subsidy for participating teams has also been increased to K50,000, with adjustments based on geographical distance. This move is expected to ease the financial burden on teams traveling long distances and ensure fair competition.
Expanded Format Brings More Excitement to 2025 ABSA Cup
For the second consecutive year, the ABSA Cup will feature 21 teams, making it one of Zambia’s most inclusive football tournaments. The breakdown of teams includes:
✅ 10 Provincial teams (representing different regions)
✅ 7 MTN Super League teams (top-tier teams based on league performance)
✅ 4 ZPL National League teams (selected based on standings)
This format aims to broaden participation, allowing provincial teams to test themselves against top-flight opponents while promoting grassroots football development. The blend of top-tier and lower-division teams makes the tournament unpredictable and highly competitive.
Tournament Schedule and Match-Ups
The 2025 ABSA Cup will kick off with the preliminary round on March 15-16, where provincial teams and some ZPL National League sides will compete for a place in the Round of 16. The main draw begins on April 5-6, where teams will battle for a spot in the quarterfinals.
With high stakes and increased prize money, the competition is expected to be fierce, with top teams aiming to lift Zambia’s most prestigious knockout trophy.
A Step Towards Zambian Football Growth
The increased investment in the ABSA Cup not only raises the stakes for competing teams but also demonstrates the growing corporate support for Zambian football. This competition has served as a platform for emerging talents to showcase their skills and for clubs to earn financial rewards while boosting their prestige.
With the new format, increased prize money, and improved travel support, the 2025 ABSA Cup is set to deliver an unforgettable spectacle for Zambian football fans.
