Avram Grant Unveils a Blend of Experience and Youth in AFCON 2023 Provisional Squad
The anticipation for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AfCON) has reached a new high as Zambia’s national football team, led by coach Avram Grant, has revealed their provisional squad for the tournament set to kick off next month. After an eight-year absence from AfCON, Zambia is making a comeback, and the unveiled squad showcases a strategic mix of seasoned veterans and emerging young talents.
Goalkeepers Ready to Guard the Nets
In the goalkeeping department, coach Grant has enlisted the services of four skilled shot-stoppers. Toaster Nsabata from Zesco United, Francis Mwansa representing Green Buffaloes, Lawrence Mulenga of Power Dynamos, and Charles Kalumba from Red Arrows form a formidable quartet. Their collective experience and agility promise a solid foundation in the defensive third.
A Sturdy Defensive Lineup
The defenders chosen for the provisional squad represent a diverse set of experiences and playing backgrounds. Stoppilla Sunzu, known for his time in Jinan Xingzhou, China, brings international exposure and leadership. Frankie Musonda, currently playing for Ayr United in Scotland, adds a touch of European football to the squad. Aime Mabika, representing Toronto FC in Canada, is set to fortify the defensive lineup alongside local talents like Dominic Chanda (Power Dynamos) and Luka Banda (Napsa Stars).
Midfield Maestros to Steer the Game
Grant’s midfield selections reflect a combination of local talents and players plying their trade in various international leagues. Mannah Chiwisa (Atalanta-Italy), Jack Chirwa (Forest Rangers), and Benson Sakala (Mlada Boleslav-Czech Republic) bring creativity and control to the midfield. The midfield also features the likes of Emmanuel Banda (HNK Rijeka-Croatia) and Clatous Chama (Simba SC-Tanzania), ensuring a balanced and dynamic midfield presence.
Firepower in the Striking Department
The striking options for Zambia are nothing short of impressive. Patson Daka, making waves in the English Premier League with Leicester City, leads the attacking lineup. Supported by the likes of Fashion Sakala (Al Fayha-Saudi Arabia), Evans Kangwa (Quingdao Hainiu-China), and Golden Mashata (Green Buffaloes), the striking force appears poised to make an impact on the AfCON stage.
Youthful Energy and Local Talent
Grant’s commitment to nurturing local talent is evident in the inclusion of young stars from the Zambian leagues. Players like Andrew Phiri (FC Muza), Moyela Libamba (Forest Rangers), and Kingstone Mutandwa (Cagliari-Italy) symbolize the infusion of youthful energy and promise in the squad.

Looking Ahead: Quality, Passion, and Desire
As the provisional squad is finalized, coach Avram Grant has set a standard for inclusion based on “quality, passion, and desire to play for one’s country.” With a well-balanced squad that combines experience, skill, and youthful exuberance, Zambia aims to make a resounding statement in the upcoming AfCON 2023.
Football enthusiasts and Zambian supporters alike eagerly await the tournament, where this diverse and talented squad will seek to leave an indelible mark on the African football stage.
