The Zambia U17 National Team recorded their first victory at the ongoing 2025 COSAFA U20 Youth Championship (Region 5 Games) with a commanding 3-0 win over Eswatini on Monday afternoon.
Coached by Aaron Kawangu, the young Zambians produced a stunning first-half performance, scoring all three goals before the break to take control of the tie and move to four points after two group matches.
Early Blitz Seals the Deal
Zambia didn’t waste any time asserting dominance, and it was Gabriel Phiri who opened the scoring in the 18th minute, capitalizing on a defensive lapse with a composed finish.
Just nine minutes later, Zambia doubled their advantage through Billy Daka, who latched onto a brilliant Kelvin Chipelu cross to tap home from close range and make it 2-0.
Chipelu, who was a constant menace down the right flank, turned scorer in the 32nd minute, finishing off a sweeping team move to make it 3-0 before halftime.
Chipelu Named Player of the Match
Kelvin Chipelu, who ended the match with a goal and an assist, was rightfully named Player of the Match for his dynamic performance on both ends of the pitch. The young winger’s energy, creativity, and clinical edge made the difference in what was otherwise a tightly contested encounter.
Although Zambia made several changes in the second half, they couldn’t add to the scoreline but comfortably held on to register their first win of the tournament.
Next Fixture: Zambia vs Botswana
With four points from two matches, Zambia will wrap up their group stage campaign with a crucial tie against Botswana. A win or even a draw could potentially secure a spot in the knockout stages, depending on results elsewhere.
Coach Aaron Kawangu will be encouraged by his team’s attacking flair and defensive organization as they aim to go deeper into the tournament.
