Zambia U17 Women Off to a Winning Start with 3-0 Victory Over Botswana
The Zambia U17 Women’s team, known as the Copper Princesses, started their COSAFA U17 Women’s Championship campaign in style, securing a dominant 3-0 victory over Botswana at the UJ Soweto Stadium. The result placed Zambia at the top of Group C, signaling their intent to challenge for the title.
Dominance from the Start
Fresh from their participation in the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup in the Dominican Republic, the Copper Princesses showcased their experience and skill, dominating the game from the outset. Zambia created numerous scoring opportunities in the first 20 minutes but failed to capitalize, with Botswana’s goalkeeper denying several close chances, including a well-taken free kick from captain Mercy Chipasula.
The attacking duo of Lweendo Hanongo and Natasha Nkaka kept the Botswana defense under constant pressure, with their link-up play almost leading to a goal before the half-hour mark. Zambia’s persistence finally paid off in the 36th minute when Chipasula found the back of the net, giving Zambia a deserved 1-0 lead at halftime.
Second-Half Brilliance
Zambia maintained their attacking momentum in the second half but struggled initially to convert their chances. The breakthrough came in the 64th minute when Natasha Nkaka scored a stunning long-range goal, doubling Zambia’s lead. Hanongo came close to adding a third, only to be denied by the woodwork. In injury time, substitute Hellen Banda sealed the victory with a clinical finish, ensuring Zambia claimed all three points.
Group C Standings
The victory placed Zambia at the summit of Group C with three points, ahead of Zimbabwe, who defeated Mauritius 2-1 in their opening game. Mauritius occupies third place, while Botswana sits at the bottom, yet to register a point.
What’s Next?
The Copper Princesses will look to build on their impressive start as they prepare for their next group match. With their confident display, Zambia has set the tone for a promising campaign in the COSAFA U17 Women’s Championship.
