Mighty Wanderers Edge Bullets 1-0 to End Unbeaten Run in Blantyre Derby

FCB Nyasa Big Bullets suffered their first loss of the 2025 TNM Super League season after a narrow 1-0 defeat to fierce rivals Mighty Mukuru Wanderers in the highly anticipated Blantyre derby at a packed Kamuzu Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

With both sides in fine form and separated by just two points on the table, this latest edition of Malawi’s biggest football rivalry lived up to its billing. Peter Mponda’s Bullets came into the clash aiming to stretch their unbeaten start to the campaign, while Bob Mpinganjira’s Wanderers sought to make a bold statement and did just that.

First-Half Set Piece Breaks the Deadlock

The Nomads started strongly and dictated the midfield tempo early on. Bullets nearly struck first in the ninth minute through a Wongani Lungu free-kick after Chikumbutso Salima was fouled, but Wanderers’ goalkeeper Chancy Mtete handled it cleanly.

Moments later, Wanderers punished the miss. A well-executed set piece in the 11th minute saw Francisco Madinga deliver a pinpoint cross, allowing Blessings Mwalilino to slot home past Innocent Nyasulu for the only goal of the match.

Mpinganjira’s charges continued to press forward, creating chances through Singini and Mpinganjira, while Bullets struggled to carve out meaningful opportunities against a resolute Wanderers backline.

Tactical Changes Fail to Spark Comeback

Trailing at the break, Mponda made key substitutions, bringing on Henry Chiwaya and Chawanangwa Gumbo to increase attacking impetus. Despite controlling possession in the second half, Bullets were repeatedly frustrated by Wanderers’ solid defensive shape.

The Nomads looked content to sit back and play on the counter. They nearly doubled their advantage in the 58th minute when Singini’s header rattled the woodwork. Meanwhile, the introduction of Ephraim Kondowe almost paid off for Bullets, but Mtete and his defence remained impenetrable.

Late Pressure Not Enough for Bullets

Yamikani Mologeni added spark off the bench late on, delivering several dangerous crosses from the right wing. In the dying moments, Babatunde Adepoju nearly found the equalizer with a powerful header, but Mtete once again came to the Nomads’ rescue with a vital save.

With five minutes of stoppage time, Bullets threw everything forward, but Wanderers stood tall to secure a memorable victory.

What the Result Means

Despite the defeat, FCB Nyasa Big Bullets remain top of the TNM Super League standings with 18 points from seven matches. However, Mighty Wanderers now trail closely with 16 points from six matches, tightening the title race considerably.

As the derby dust settles, both teams will look ahead to the next round of fixtures but for Wanderers, this was a statement win that reignites their ambitions for the 2025 TNM Super League crown.
