Napsa Stars Part Ways with Head Coach Sipho Mumbi

Napsa Stars have pulled the trigger.

The Lusaka-based club have sacked Head Coach Sipho Mumbi after a troubling run of performances that has left the pensioners flirting dangerously with relegation. With just four wins all season and sitting only two points above the drop zone, the decision — though officially described as “mutual” — feels less like a surprise and more like inevitability.

When results stagnate and survival becomes the primary objective, patience quickly runs out.

The club confirmed the development on Friday through an official statement:

“Napsa Stars Football Club wishes to announce that the Club has parted ways with Head Coach Sipho Mumbi by mutual agreement.”

But in football, context matters. And the context here is stark.

Four wins in an entire campaign is not mid-table form — it is survival form. Napsa Stars have struggled for consistency, cutting a side that often looks organised but toothless when it matters most. Sitting just two points above the relegation zone, the margin for error has been reduced to almost nothing.

The final nail appeared to come on Wednesday when the pensioners suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to Nkana. In a season defined by fine margins, that result may have been interpreted internally as proof that change could no longer be delayed.

The restructuring was not limited to Mumbi alone. His assistant, Lawrence Munsha Lubinda, and Goalkeeper Coach Samuel Banda have also been dismissed.

“The Club has also mutually separated with First Assistant Coach Lawrence Munsha Lubinda and Goalkeeper Coach Samuel Banda as part of the restructuring of the technical bench.”

Chief Executive Officer Charles Chakatazya added:

“We are grateful for their service to Napsa Stars and we wish them the very best in their future endeavours.”

Official statements are always measured. They are diplomatic by design. But from a footballing perspective, this is a survival decision.

From where I stand, the move reflects urgency more than strategy. Napsa’s issue has not only been technical — it has been psychological. A team that wins four matches in a season is either lacking attacking conviction, defensive consistency, or belief. Often, it is a combination of all three.

The question now is whether the change addresses the root cause — or merely treats the symptom.

With the club only two points above the relegation zone, this is no longer about long-term philosophy. It is about immediate results.

The next appointment must stabilise the dressing room quickly, restore confidence, and most importantly, collect points. Anything less could drag Napsa deeper into the relegation fight.

Coaching changes can revive a season — or expose deeper structural cracks.

For Napsa Stars, this is a gamble made under pressure. And in a league where margins are thin, the outcome of this decision could define their campaign.
