MBEWE FUMES OVER ARROWS’ DISPLAY
Banda was speaking after Wanderers held Red Arrows to a draw, describing the result as acceptable despite his team’s continued struggles in front of goal.
“The game was okay, a tough one, but I think a draw is not bad,” Banda said.
The coach admitted that scoring remains a concern, despite his team’s ability to create opportunities, and called for greater conviction in the final third.
“Yes, scoring has been worrisome because we always create chances, but I think finishing is something that we need to work extra hard on. The boys can do it; it’s just the conviction and self-belief that are still lacking,” he said.
Banda also identified slow transitions from defence to attack as another area requiring improvement, explaining that the delay gives opponents enough time to reorganise defensively.
“In our transition from defence to attack, I think we are too slow, and that helps our opponents to reorganise,” he said.
Despite the concerns, the Wanderers coach was encouraged by his team’s defensive performance, particularly after what he described as a shaky display from the central defenders in their previous match against Green Eagles.
He also praised the goalkeeping department and urged his players to build on the positives from the latest performance.
“I think the central defence in our game against Green Eagles was shaky, and the goalkeeping department today, I think the boys accounted themselves very well. We should build on what we have done today,” Banda said.
He maintained that the team was progressing but insisted there was still room for improvement.
“I think the boys are doing fine, but I still feel they can do better,” he said.
Banda added that the team remained eager to secure its first victory and was confident the breakthrough would come soon.
“The first win is something that we are yearning for, and we will get it anytime soon,” he said.
Mbewe blames Red Arrows’ attitude
Meanwhile, Red Arrows head coach Chisi Mbewe described his team’s performance as a bad day at the office, admitting that the Airmen failed to execute their game plan.
“I think it’s a bad day at the office. The whole 90 minutes, we did not play our game,” Mbewe said.
The coach explained that his players appeared nervous and struggled to maintain possession, allowing Wanderers to compete effectively throughout the match.
“The way we planned coming into this game is not the way we played. I think we looked a bit jittery, we looked a bit heavy. We failed to play and failed to make maybe more than five passes,” he said.
Mbewe credited Wanderers for their preparation and believed the hosts deserved to leave with a point.
“I think Mighty did well. They prepared for this game, and I think they deserve to walk away with a draw,” he said.
Despite the disappointing display, Mbewe was not overly concerned about his team’s ability to score, pointing to the chances created in previous matches and in the latest encounter.
He said Red Arrows had been too eager to find the net, with that urgency contributing to unnecessary mistakes.
“If we are creating chances, then we are okay. If you look at the games that we have played, we have been creating chances and scoring. Here, we created chances, but we were in too much of a hurry to score, and that resulted in us making unnecessary mistakes,” Mbewe said.
The Red Arrows coach said the team would return to training to address its shortcomings, particularly the need to control matches and convert scoring opportunities.
“I think a lot of lessons have been learned from this game. The most important thing is that we go back into training and remind the players how important it is to finish the chances we create and how important it is to control the game,” he said.
Mbewe also admitted that his players may have underestimated their opponents, suggesting their attitude contributed to the result.
“We were not worried coming into this game. I think our attitude cost us because, looking at the results Mighty got in the last game, we thought it was going to be a walk in the park,” he said.
The draw leaves both sides with areas to address as the transitional league campaign continues, with Wanderers seeking their first win and Red Arrows aiming to return to their expected level of performance.
