FIFA World Cup, the centre of international football, captivates the world every four years. However, before the grandeur of the tournament itself, teams from across the globe embark on a thrilling journey known as the FIFA World Cup qualifiers. These qualifiers serve as the gateway for national teams to secure a coveted spot in the tournament, ensuring that only the most skilled and determined teams can compete on the grandest stage of them all.
Here in Africa the Confederation of African football (CAF) is responsible for drawing teams into groups and this year FIFA has followed a new format which will see 9 teams from Africa qualifying for the world cup unlike 5 from the previous years. This years official FIFA draw was on 13th July 2023 where Malawi was drawn in Group H alongside teams like Tunisia, equatorial guinea, Namibia, Liberia and Sao Tome and Principe
Malawi will face the threat of Tunisia which is one of the competitive National football team in the context of African football.Tunisia has qualified for the FIFA World Cup on five occasions, their qualification itself is considered a significant accomplishment and despite that they also have a strong domestic league which produces talented players who often play in Europe’s top leagues. Since 2004 Malawi only played 3 games with Tunisia and Tunisia won 2 of them while the 3rd ended in a draw.
On the other hand equatorial Guinea ranked the 91st by FIFA has alittle football heritage just like Malawi. From their previous matches, Malawi has won 5 of the 7 matches played between these two teams since 2005.They both have competitive players who are strong and have been performing very well in other matches.
The Namibia football team has never qualified for the FIFA World Cup, but has twice been runner up in the COSAFA Cup.With their collective force and pressure when playing on the field, might see them going through easily.Malawi and Namibia played 5 Games since 2011.Among them, Malawi won 3 games and drew 2 of them.
FIFA World Cup qualifiers serve as a compelling prelude to the grand tournament itself, embodying the essence of football as a global passion. From the determination of players and the unwavering support of fans to the challenges faced by teams and the unpredictability of results, the qualifiers captivate football enthusiasts worldwide.
