Israeli Premier League side Hapoel Be’er Sheva have completed the signing of Zambian winger Joseph ‘Sabobo’ Banda from Swiss outfit FC Zurich.
The 20-year-old has penned a four-year contract with the Israeli State Cup champions, joining Chipolopolo teammate Klings Kangwa at the club. Banda’s move marks another significant step in his budding career after joining FC Zurich from Atletico Lusaka last year.
“Excited to Help the Team Reach Its Goals” – Banda
Speaking after sealing the deal, Banda expressed his delight at joining Be’er Sheva and revealed the role Klings Kangwa played in influencing the move.
“I’m very excited to sign for the club. I’m aware of the goals before us and I’m determined to help my new friends achieve them,” he said.
“I am very happy to have collaborated with my good friend from the Zambian national team, Klings Kangwa, who told me a lot about the club, the ambitions, the love and the amazing crowd that surrounds him. Good luck to the team in the game tonight!”
Banda’s signing adds to the growing Zambian presence in Europe and brings further attention to the development of young talent from Southern Africa.
From Lusaka to Europe: The Rise of Sabobo
Banda first rose to prominence as a standout performer for Zambia at the 2020 and 2021 COSAFA U-17 Championships. His performances earned him trials at football giants Barcelona and French Ligue 1 side Lille before landing a professional deal with FC Zurich in 2023.
His journey from the dusty pitches of Lusaka with Atletico to European football is a story of perseverance, talent, and raw ambition.
Chipolopolo Connection in Israel
At Be’er Sheva, Banda links up with fellow Zambian international Klings Kangwa, who has become a fan favourite and a key figure at the club. The presence of Kangwa could help ease Banda’s transition to Israeli football, both on and off the pitch.
With Be’er Sheva pushing for both league and continental success, Banda’s pace, flair, and creativity on the wing will be a valuable addition.
