Frankie Musonda to Miss AFCON Qualifier
Lusaka, Zambia — Zambia’s national football team, the Chipolopolo, has been dealt another significant blow ahead of their crucial AFCON 2025 qualifiers. Head coach Avram Grant has confirmed that key defender Frankie Musonda will be sidelined due to an injury sustained while playing for his Scottish club, Ayr United. Musonda is expected to be out for over a month, ruling him out of Zambia’s upcoming qualifiers.
This development compounds the challenges for the national team, as it comes on the heels of the news that star striker Patson Daka will also miss the qualifiers due to a serious ankle injury that will keep him out for up to two months. Both players’ absences are a significant setback for Zambia as they prepare to face Ivory Coast and Sierra Leone in pivotal matches next month.
Coach Avram Grant now faces the tough task of reconfiguring his squad without two of his key players. The pressure is on to find suitable replacements, with a potential shift toward utilizing locally based talent or other Zambian players abroad. The situation particularly highlights the importance of depth in the squad, as injuries to such critical players could impact the team’s performance and qualification hopes.
With the qualifiers fast approaching, Zambia will need to rally and adapt to these challenges to keep their AFCON 2025 aspirations alive.
