Fashion Sakala Named New Chipolopolo Captain

By Bola Yapa Zed Sports Desk | 16th November 2025

The Chipolopolo technical bench has confirmed a significant leadership reshuffle ahead of the 2025 TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, with winger Fashion Sakala appointed as the new captain of the national team. The changes were announced in Spain, where the Zambia national team is currently camping as preparations intensify for the continental showpiece.

Leadership Changes Explained

Head coach Moses Sichone confirmed that Sakala will now lead the Chipolopolo Boys, supported by a revised leadership hierarchy. Lubambo Musonda has been named first assistant captain, followed by Kings Kangwa as second assistant, Frankie Musonda as third assistant, and Benson Sakala as fourth assistant captain. The announcement was made shortly before Monday’s training session at the Pinatar Sports Arena in Murcia.

Sichone’s Message to the Squad

Addressing the players, Sichone thanked Lubambo Musonda for his leadership during his tenure as captain, emphasizing that the changes were made in the best interests of the team. The coach urged the squad to rally behind Sakala as the Chipolopolo prepare for AFCON.

“Lubambo is still one of the captains; we just thought it necessary to make a few changes at that level. I urge you all to support the new team leadership,” Sichone said.

Musonda Backs the Transition

Former captain Lubambo Musonda welcomed the changes and called on the players to respect and support the new leadership structure. He stressed the importance of unity and discipline as Zambia heads into a demanding AFCON campaign.

“As the coach has said, I urge you to support the new guy (Fashion Sakala) and the rest of the players announced. Take the instructions seriously and obey them, as they are messengers for the technical bench,” Musonda said.

Sakala Reacts to Captaincy Role

Fashion Sakala accepted the captaincy with humility, acknowledging the responsibility that comes with leading the national team. The Al Fayha forward thanked God, the technical bench, and his teammates for the trust placed in him, while also paying tribute to Musonda’s leadership.

“I’m honored to be considered for the role of captain of the Chipolopolo. This comes with a huge responsibility to not only the team itself but the nation at large. I thank God for this. Grateful to my coach and my team mates,” Sakala said.

Conclusion

With AFCON Morocco 2025 fast approaching, the appointment of Fashion Sakala signals a new chapter in Chipolopolo leadership. Zambia, drawn in Group A alongside hosts Morocco, Mali, and Comoros, will be hoping the leadership changes strengthen unity, focus, and belief as the team targets a strong showing at Africa’s biggest football tournament.
