Green Buffaloes FC have officially unveiled veteran coach Aggrey Chiyangi as their new head coach, completing a highly anticipated appointment ahead of the 2025/26 MTN Super League season. As earlier reported by the Bola Yapa Zed Crew, Chiyangi has signed a two-year deal with the Zambia Army-sponsored side.
Chiyangi, 61, had been a subject of interest from three MTN Super League teams, but it is the Green Buffaloes who have won the race for his signature. His appointment follows the club’s recent parting of ways with Masauso Tembo, who endured a challenging 2024/25 campaign.
Proven Track Record
The former Power Dynamos midfielder brings with him an impressive résumé, having successfully managed several top Zambian clubs including Green Eagles, Nkana, Zanaco, and Nchanga Rangers. Most recently, he guided High Flying Nkwazi to their best league performance in years.
Chiyangi began his coaching career under the late Ben Bamfuchile at Power Dynamos before taking over at Chambishi FC, where he led them to the 2007 Barclays Cup Final.
Continental Experience with Green Eagles
Chiyangi’s most notable spell came with Green Eagles (2017–2022), where he transformed the Choma-based side into a consistent top-four team. Under his leadership, Eagles:
-
Finished 4th in 2018, qualifying for the CAF Confederation Cup
-
Secured 2nd place in 2019, earning a spot in the CAF Champions League
-
Won bronze at the 2019 CECAFA Kagame Cup in Rwanda
-
Eliminated South Africa’s Orlando Pirates from the CAF Champions League in August 2019
This blend of domestic and international success made Chiyangi a standout candidate for the Green Buffaloes job.
National Team Credentials
Chiyangi also boasts national team experience, having led Zambia to victory in the 2019 COSAFA Cup. His tactical discipline and ability to get results on big occasions remain a hallmark of his coaching style.
Decorated Player Turned Respected Coach
As a player, Chiyangi is fondly remembered for his time at Power Dynamos, where he won several domestic titles and the prestigious Mandela Cup. He also featured in the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations final, where Zambia finished as runners-up to Nigeria.
Conclusion
Aggrey Chiyangi’s appointment is a major statement of intent by Green Buffaloes as they seek to rebuild and compete at the highest level again. With a proven pedigree both locally and continentally, his arrival could signal the dawn of a new era for the Lusaka-based giants.
