Mzuzu City Hammers Cut Ties with Mkwinika Amid Work Conflict
Mzuzu City Hammers have confirmed the departure of head coach Steve Mkwinika, ending a short-lived tenure amid concerns over his dual role as a school head teacher and football manager.
In a significant development from the North, Mzuzu City Hammers FC have mutually agreed to part ways with head coach Steve Mkwinika, citing mounting concerns over his ability to balance responsibilities between coaching and serving as a primary school head teacher in Mzimba.
According to inside sources, the school administration expressed discomfort with Mkwinika’s professional football commitments, especially during weekday training and weekend fixtures. The situation prompted a mutual agreement between club and coach to part ways.
Under Mkwinika, Mzuzu City Hammers had a mixed start to the 2025 TNM Super League, collecting 4 points from four matches with one win, one draw, and two losses. The team currently sits 14th out of 16 teams after Week 7, flirting dangerously with the relegation zone.

Their cup run in the 2025 Airtel Top 8 also ended in disappointment after a crushing 4-0 defeat to Civil Service United, which hastened the need for change in the technical area.
Club insiders say a new head coach will be appointed soon as Mzuzu City Hammers look to stabilize their league form and avoid another relegation scrap.
