Power Dynamos Stun Kabwe Warriors to Take League Lead
Kabwe Warriors’ MTN Super League title aspirations took a significant hit after suffering a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Power Dynamos on Sunday. The result marked Warriors’ second consecutive league loss, following their 1-0 defeat to Green Buffaloes the previous weekend. Assistant coach Derick Mulenga expressed disappointment, admitting that the team had aimed to reclaim the top spot but fell short against a determined Power Dynamos side.
Power Dynamos Rise to the Top
The victory saw Power Dynamos rise to first place in the league with 48 points, overtaking Zesco United, who were held to a goalless draw by Forest Rangers in Ndola. Kabwe Warriors, now third with 44 points, remain in the title race but face an uphill battle after back-to-back defeats.
“This game was one where we hoped to collect maximum points, at least to go back to second or first on the log, but it was a disappointing result,” Mulenga stated after the match.
Early Setbacks Cost Warriors
The Magnificent People’s Team found themselves trailing early in the match, conceding in the 17th minute when Chifundo Mphasi opened the scoring for Power Dynamos. The situation worsened in the 32nd minute when Austin Muwowo doubled the lead from the penalty spot, putting Warriors in a difficult position before halftime.
“I think in the first half, we allowed two goals. It’s usually difficult to come back from two down,” Mulenga admitted.
Gabriel Banda’s Effort Not Enough
Kabwe Warriors showed signs of life in the second half, pulling one back through Gabriel Banda in the 58th minute, igniting hopes of a comeback. However, those hopes were short-lived as Mphasi struck again in the 66th minute, sealing the victory for Power Dynamos and restoring their two-goal advantage.
“When we started the second half, we got one goal, and that gave us hope that we could get another,” Mulenga added.
What’s Next for Kabwe Warriors?
With ten games remaining, Warriors must quickly regroup as they prepare for their upcoming away fixture against FC MUZA in Mazabuka. MUZA, who are currently struggling for consistency, also suffered a 2-1 defeat to Atletico Lusaka in their last outing. A win in their next match will be crucial if Warriors are to keep pace with Power Dynamos and Zesco United in the title race.
