Mumbwa United are staring at possible relegation to Division Two after being docked 18 points for featuring players registered with more than one club. The heavy sanction has significantly altered their season, plunging the team into a survival battle with only a few matches remaining.
Head coach James Chilambi confirmed the development, revealing that the points deduction has left the side rooted at the bottom of the Division One Central Province table on 31 points, with just three games left to play. The decision has placed immense pressure on the team as they attempt to avoid the drop under difficult circumstances.
Chilambi acknowledged the severity of the situation and called for improved administrative discipline within the club moving forward. He stressed that such lapses must be addressed if the team manages to retain its Division One status, highlighting the importance of proper player registration and governance in modern football.
The coach made these remarks following a 2-2 draw against league champions Forest Myooye in a Week 31 fixture played in Mumbwa. Despite the off-field setback, Mumbwa United showed resilience on the pitch, with striker Victor Sakala netting a brace to earn a point.
Forest Myooye, already crowned champions, were also made to work hard for the result, with winger John Mwansa scoring twice to ensure his side avoided defeat. Their head coach, Evaristo Mkandawire, cautioned his players against complacency, emphasizing that the season is not yet over despite their confirmed title.
Conclusion
Mumbwa United’s relegation fears now hinge on their response in the final three matches of the season. While the points deduction has dealt a major blow, their fighting performance against the champions shows there is still belief within the squad. However, survival will require both results on the pitch and a renewed focus on administrative discipline off it.
