Zambia’s senior national team, Zambia national football team, is set for a landmark international friendly against world champions Argentina national football team in Buenos Aires, in what promises to be one of the most high-profile fixtures in recent Zambian football history.

According to the Football Association of Zambia, the match will take place on Tuesday, March 31, 2026, at the iconic La Bombonera Stadium.

Acting FAZ General Secretary Iva Lengwe described the fixture as a significant milestone for Zambian football, underlining its global relevance.

“We have received an invitation to play Argentina, and it is an opportunity we simply cannot pass up. When the world champions come calling, you answer. It is a clear sign of the respect Zambia has continued to earn on the global stage,” Lengwe said.

The association has confirmed a dual-squad strategy due to a scheduling clash with the Botswana Four Nations Tournament. Head coach George Lwandamina will lead the main Chipolopolo squad to South America, while Osward Mutapa will take charge of a largely youthful, locally assembled side heading to Francistown.

The Botswana assignment is expected to play a strategic role in Zambia’s preparations for the upcoming Olympic Games, with the squad likely to include emerging talents and selected local league standouts.

“Since we have already confirmed to FIFA that we are taking part in the Olympics, the Four Nations Tournament is a good platform for us to launch preparations for our Olympics team that will consist of both local and foreign-based players. The selection of both teams is expected to be thorough,” Lengwe explained.

The Francistown-bound team is scheduled to depart on March 25, while the squad travelling to Argentina is expected to leave on March 27.

Beyond its prestige, the Argentina friendly offers Zambia a rare opportunity to test itself against elite opposition on one of football’s grand stages. Facing the reigning world champions will provide valuable tactical and psychological insights for Lwandamina’s side as they continue to rebuild and strengthen their international competitiveness.

At the same time, the Botswana tournament ensures that the next generation of Chipolopolo talent gains crucial exposure, reinforcing FAZ’s broader developmental pathway.

With two squads, two missions, and a shared national objective, Zambia’s football programme enters a defining period that blends ambition with long-term planning.
