AFCON Winner James Chamanga Honors His Football Father After Hanging Up His Boots
2012 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) winner James Chamanga has officially announced his retirement from professional football, bringing an illustrious career to a close with a heartfelt gesture to Coach Wedson Nyirenda, the man who first believed in him.
In a symbolic moment, Chamanga presented his final season jersey to Nyirenda, calling him his “football father” and attributing the discipline and success in his career to the coach’s early mentorship.
“Coach Wedson Nyirenda is the one who introduced me to professional football. He is like a father to me — he instilled in me the discipline people see today,” Chamanga said emotionally.
“Money Can’t Measure What He Did For Me” – Chamanga
Chamanga, visibly moved, explained that the jersey was the only gift he could give Nyirenda because no amount of money could ever be enough to repay what the coach did for him.
“The only gift I can give him is my jersey,” Chamanga said. “Money is not enough, because what Coach Wedson did for me cannot be measured by monetary value.”
It was a gesture steeped in meaning and gratitude — a veteran striker acknowledging the roots of his journey.

Coach Wedson: “I Will Frame This Jersey”
Coach Nyirenda, deeply touched by the tribute, responded with genuine emotion and admiration for Chamanga’s character and career.
“For James to choose me for such a special gesture means a lot. I will frame that jersey among my accolades. It’s more than just a piece of cloth — it’s a reminder of impact, discipline, and the bond we share.”
He also used the opportunity to urge younger players to emulate Chamanga’s mindset:
“James played abroad for a team that paid him well, but when he came back to Zambia, he didn’t chase money — he chased trophies. He joined Red Arrows because he wanted to win, not just earn.”
A Champion’s Mindset and Legacy
Chamanga’s return to Zambia saw him join Red Arrows, where he played a critical role in helping the club win the MTN Super League and the ABSA Cup, further adding to his decorated career.
His relentless drive to succeed and humble attitude remain an inspiration for upcoming footballers in Zambia and across Africa.
