“We Need Proper Organisation” – Barbra Banda

The Copper Queens’ FIFA Series campaign got off to a difficult start after a 4-0 defeat to Canada Women’s National Soccer Team, a result largely attributed to fatigue and disjointed preparations.

The team’s arrival in Brazil was staggered, with several key players, including Banda, Grace Chanda, Martha Tembo and Lushomo Mweemba only arriving in Cuiabá on matchday. Others such as Maweta Chilenga, Natasha Nanyangwe, Agness Phiri, and Ngosa Chabwe joined the squad just hours before kickoff.

Assistant coach Charles Haalubono, who is currently leading the team in the absence of Nora Häuptle, cited fatigue as a major factor behind the disappointing result.

However, Banda who featured in the second half pointed to deeper structural issues, particularly around organisation and preparation.

“We can be top players, but if we are not organised well, then I don’t think we are going to do magic for us to win,” Banda said in an interview with FAZ media.

She stressed that improved planning and management are critical if Zambia is to compete at the highest level.

“We need proper organisation. It starts from the management and everything. We need to do better because, at the end of the day, these are FIFA Series games, and we are dropping our standards.”

The Orlando Pride striker also called on both FAZ and government authorities to step in and improve conditions around the national team setup.

“Honestly, I would like to see change more change. It’s not that we can’t compete with these teams, but preparation is the most important thing. We are representing Zambia with pride, so we also need to be considered.”

Banda’s remarks come amid ongoing uncertainty surrounding the team’s technical bench, following the absence and reported resignation of Häuptle ahead of the tournament.

In a recent statement, Häuptle highlighted several structural challenges affecting the development of women’s football in Zambia, including the need for better travel logistics, consistent leadership, improved financial planning, and increased exposure to high-level international matches.

The Copper Queens now face a critical moment both competitively and structurally as they seek to restore confidence and standards ahead of major upcoming tournaments.
