Newly appointed Chipolopolo head coach Moses Sichone says his side is ready for a tough challenge when Zambia faces South Africa in a high-profile international friendly match this Saturday.
Despite South African media and fans downplaying Zambia’s threat, Sichone has vowed that his team will approach the fixture with full seriousness as they prepare for the upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.
Speaking to journalists in Lusaka, the Chipolopolo boss admitted that he is aware of the skepticism from South African quarters but insisted that Zambia’s focus is on proving themselves on the pitch.
“We are expecting a tough game against South Africa, and we also want to give them a good friendly game,” Sichone said. “We are not just going there to play — we’re taking it very seriously, and we also want to win the game because South Africa qualified for the World Cup, and it’s a good test for us.”
The former Chipolopolo captain emphasized that the team’s approach will be no different from a competitive fixture.
“As a technical bench, we are taking this game as if it’s a cup final. We know that they have underrated us. I’ve seen comments from South Africa — they wanted to play Brazil — but for us, we take it as it comes. We hope to go and get a positive result.”
Sichone also acknowledged the weight of expectation that comes with leading the Zambian national team.
“I know this is not a club. I’m representing the entire twenty million people plus,” he said. “The only thing I can do is to ask for support. I understand the job that I’m in, and I’m looking forward to every game until AFCON.”
The coach urged fans to rally behind the team as they aim to build momentum ahead of the continental tournament.
“Expectations here are always high, and people are looking for results. We’ll try our best to bring glory to mother Zambia. The only thing I ask from the entire nation is support,” he added.
Both Zambia and South Africa are deep in preparations for the AFCON, which kicks off on December 21, 2025, in Morocco. Zambia has been drawn in Group A alongside hosts Morocco, Mali, and Comoros, while South Africa will also look to sharpen their squad ahead of the continental showpiece.
The friendly will serve as an important test for Sichone’s newly assembled squad, which features a mix of experienced internationals and promising local players.
As Zambia continue their build-up to AFCON 2025, Coach Moses Sichone’s determination and belief could spark renewed hope among fans. The clash with South Africa is more than just a friendly — it’s a chance for the Chipolopolo to silence doubters and show they remain a force in African football.
