Mayuka: Quick Fixes Won’t Take Zambia to the World Cup

Mayuka Quick Fixes Won't Take Zambia to the World Cup

Former Chipolopolo striker Emmanuel Mayuka believes Zambia’s failure to qualify for the FIFA World Cup is rooted in a lack of consistency and weak football foundations.

The 2012 Africa Cup of Nations winner shared his thoughts while appearing on That Zed Podcast, where he reflected on Zambia’s continued absence from football’s biggest tournament despite the country’s rich football history and continental success.

Consistency Is the Missing Ingredient

Mayuka, who scored three goals during Zambia’s historic AFCON triumph in 2012, said the country’s football development model needs a complete rethink if the national team is to compete consistently at the highest level.

“The reason why we are not performing at the highest level and failing to qualify for the World Cup is because of consistency.”

“Football is like building a house; you cannot start building from the roof going down. You have to start from down going up.”

The former Southampton striker stressed that sustainable success can only be achieved through long-term planning and proper player development structures.

No Regrets About Missing the World Cup

Despite enjoying a successful international career and helping Zambia win its first AFCON title, Mayuka never had the opportunity to play at a FIFA World Cup.

However, the former striker says he has no regrets and remains hopeful that the current generation can achieve what his generation could not.

“It’s something I wanted to achieve with the national team.”

“Whatever God allows you to have, you accept it, so I cannot say it was a regret. I believe that the next generation will pick it going forward.”

A Message for FAZ

Mayuka also shared his thoughts on what the Football Association of Zambia should prioritize moving forward.

While avoiding criticism of the current administration, he emphasized the need to focus on grassroots development and creating a clear football structure.

“We should go back to the roots. The foundation. We should start from scratch again.”

“Quick fixes are easy. I am not saying the new FAZ president is doing something wrong. He just came in, so probably he knows what he is going to do.”

The former forward believes Zambia has enough talent but requires better structures and stronger leadership within the national team setup.

Leadership and Structure Key

According to Mayuka, success will come through patience, planning and leadership.

“The young ones are there, we should just find a structure, and we should have leadership in that team.”

“I am not criticizing the players or anything, but we should have leadership in that team.”

His comments come at a time when Zambia remains in pursuit of a historic first FIFA World Cup qualification.

Conclusion

As one of the heroes of Zambia’s greatest football achievement, Emmanuel Mayuka’s words carry significant weight.

While many continue searching for quick solutions, the former Chipolopolo striker believes the answer lies in rebuilding from the ground up, strengthening structures and developing a consistent football philosophy that can eventually lead Zambia to its long-awaited World Cup debut.
