Green Buffaloes Women’s FC Suffer Second Defeat at COSAFA Women’s Champions League: Semifinal Hopes Dwindle
Green Buffaloes Women’s FC journey in the COSAFA Women’s Champions League has hit a rough patch after a second consecutive defeat, this time at the hands of Namibia’s FC Ongos Ladies. The Zambian champions fell 2-1 in a tense encounter, putting their hopes of advancing to the semifinals in jeopardy.
The match, held at the Mpira Stadium in Blantyre, Malawi, saw the Buffaloes struggle to find their rhythm. Beverly Uueziua put FC Ongos ahead in the 25th minute, capitalizing on a lapse in the Buffaloes’ defense. The Namibians doubled their lead in the 39th minute when Twelikondjele Evilyakondjelua Amukoto found the back of the net, leaving the Zambians with a mountain to climb.
Despite the setback, Green Buffaloes showed resilience in the second half. Vanessa Chikupila pulled one back for the Zambian side in the 63rd minute, sparking hope for a comeback. However, FC Ongos Ladies held firm, denying the Buffaloes any further opportunities to level the match.
This loss comes on the heels of Buffaloes’ previous defeat, putting them in a precarious position in the group standings. The Zambians now find themselves relying on other results to keep their COSAFA Women’s Champions League dreams alive. Specifically, they need Zimbabwe’s Herentals Queens to defeat South Africa’s University of the Western Cape (UWC) in their next match. A win for Herentals would give the Buffaloes a slim chance of finishing second in the group and advancing to the semifinals.
The situation is far from ideal for the Buffaloes, who entered the tournament as one of the favorites. Their back-to-back losses have raised concerns about their form and ability to compete at the highest level in the region. With only one game left in the group stage, the pressure is on for the Zambian champions to deliver a strong performance and hope that other results go their way.
As the COSAFA Women’s Champions League unfolds, the spotlight remains on Green Buffaloes to see if they can overcome this challenging period and make it to the semifinals. For now, the team and their fans must wait and watch, hoping for a favorable outcome in the upcoming matches.
