Copper Queens Will Not Fear Nigeria, Says Margaret Belemu

Copper Queens defender Margaret Belemu says Zambia will approach their TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) 2026 clash against Nigeria with confidence, insisting the team is ready to face any challenge that comes its way.

Zambia has been drawn into a challenging Group B alongside nine-time African champions Nigeria, Egypt and COSAFA rivals Malawi, with the top teams battling for places in the knockout stages and qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Despite suffering a heavy defeat to the Super Falcons at the previous tournament, Belemu believes the Copper Queens are a different team and are fully prepared for the task ahead.

No Fear of Nigeria

Nigeria defeated Zambia 5-0 in the quarter-finals of the last WAFCON, but Belemu says the squad has moved on and is focused on creating a different outcome this time around.

“We know it’s a very difficult group, but we’re battle-ready. Playing against Nigeria is always a big challenge, and we’re looking forward to it,” Belemu said.

The experienced right-back believes Zambia’s preparations will give the team the confidence needed to compete against Africa’s most successful women’s football nation.

“We lost to Nigeria the last time we played them, but this will be a different challenge. We’re preparing well and believe we’ll be ready when the tournament begins.”

Tough Group Awaits

The Copper Queens face one of the most competitive groups in the tournament, with Nigeria bringing a rich history of continental success, Egypt continuing to improve and Malawi making their maiden appearance at the WAFCON finals.

Every match is expected to be crucial as Zambia aims to progress beyond the group stage and challenge for the title.

The tournament also carries extra significance, with the top four teams qualifying for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.

Zambia Chasing More Continental Success

The Copper Queens continue to establish themselves among Africa’s leading women’s football nations.

After winning a historic bronze medal at the 2022 WAFCON, Zambia will be hoping to go even further this year under head coach Nora Häuptle.

With experienced players like Margaret Belemu leading the squad alongside an exciting blend of local and foreign-based talent, expectations remain high ahead of the tournament in Morocco.

Conclusion

Margaret Belemu’s confidence reflects the belief growing within the Copper Queens camp as Zambia prepares for another shot at continental glory.

While Nigeria remains one of Africa’s toughest opponents, the defender insists Zambia will step onto the pitch without fear and determined to make a strong statement at WAFCON 2026.
