Copper Queens Gear Up: Zambia Women’s National Team Initiates Training for 2024 WAFCON Qualifiers

The preparations for the upcoming 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) back-to-back matches against Angola are underway for the Zambia Women’s National Team, also known as the Copper Queens. Commencing their training at Lusaka’s Sunset Stadium on Sunday, the team, under the guidance of coach Florence Mwila, exhibited a sharp performance in a rigorous session. Notably, Kazakhstan-based players Ireen Lungu and Martha Tembo actively participated in the training.

However, the ZESCO Ndola Girls trio—Leticia Lungu, Avell Chitundu, and Fridah Kabwe—will be joining the squad tomorrow, owing to their prior commitment in a game against Chipata Girls at the Trade Fair Ground. Other foreign-based players are anticipated to join the camp when the FIFA women’s international window opens on November 27, 2023.

The team’s primary objective is to secure a fourth consecutive appearance at the WAFCON, building on their previous achievement of winning bronze against Nigeria at the 2022 WAFCON in Morocco. The squad comprises players from various clubs, both domestically and internationally.
