The Zambia women’s national football team concluded their 2026 COSAFA Women’s Championship campaign on a positive note, defeating the Zimbabwe women’s national football team 3–1 to secure third place. In a composed and clinical performance, Zambia demonstrated attacking efficiency and game management to ensure they left the tournament with silverware.
Agness Phiri set the tone early, opening the scoring in just the second minute with a well-taken finish that unsettled Zimbabwe’s defensive structure. She doubled her tally in the 26th minute, capitalising on sustained attacking pressure and reaffirming Zambia’s dominance in the first half. Mercy Chipasula extended the advantage to 3–0 just before the break, finishing in the 44th minute to effectively place the contest beyond Zimbabwe’s immediate reach.
Zimbabwe responded in the second half when Rutendo Makore capitalised on a defensive lapse to pull one goal back. However, Zambia maintained tactical discipline in the closing stages, controlling possession and limiting further threats to preserve the two-goal cushion. The victory confirmed bronze for the former champions, who narrowly missed out on a place in the final.
Assistant coach Charles Haalubono described the third-place finish as a morale booster following the disappointment of missing the final. He emphasized that the tournament provided critical lessons that will inform preparations for the upcoming Women’s Africa Cup of Nations. Player of the Match Agness Phiri acknowledged the physical and tactical challenge posed by Zimbabwe but stressed that the squad was determined to conclude the competition on a high note.
Conclusion
While the Copper Queens may have fallen short of reclaiming the COSAFA title, their bronze-medal finish reflects resilience and competitive depth. With continental assignments ahead, Zambia departs the tournament with renewed focus and valuable momentum.
