Newly promoted MTN Super League side Mines United Football Club has officially appointed Christopher “Gazza” Tembo as its new head coach, marking a bold and strategic step as the club gears up for its debut season in Zambia’s top-flight league.
Tembo replaces Geoffrey Hamakwenda, who parted ways with the club by mutual consent after guiding them to promotion.
A Coach with Proven Pedigree
Coach Christopher Tembo brings a wealth of regional and international coaching experience to the table. Most recently, he led Malanti Chiefs to the 2024/2025 NFD Championship title in Eswatini (formerly Swaziland), cementing his reputation as a tactician capable of delivering results under pressure.
He has also had previous stints with Manzini Sundowns, further strengthening his profile as an experienced leader with a strong understanding of Southern African football dynamics.
Tembo’s appointment is seen as a major coup for the club as it looks to establish itself in the competitive landscape of the MTN Super League.
Club Leadership Backing the Vision
Club Chairman Mathew Mohan and CEO Michael Musonda have expressed strong confidence in Coach Tembo’s capabilities, highlighting his leadership qualities, international experience, and tactical awareness as key assets to lead the team to success.
“Coach Tembo brings the kind of experience and professionalism we need as we enter a new era. We are confident he is the right man to lead Mines United in our maiden Super League campaign,” said Mohan.
Mines United’s leadership has already shown signs of serious intent by assembling a Council of Elders, made up of respected football figures tasked with providing guidance to both the technical bench and the club’s administrative structures.

As the countdown to the 2025/26 MTN Super League season begins, all eyes will be on Mines United to see how the newcomers will fare under Tembo’s guidance. With preparations underway, the club is expected to bolster its squad and put in place the right structures to survive and possibly thrive at the top level.

Mines United Football Club is pleased to announce the appointment of Christopher ’Gaza` Tembo as the new head coach of the club. He takes over from Geoffrey Hamakwenda, who has mutually agreed to part ways with the club.
The Club would like to thank Coach Hamakwenda for his service and massive contribution and wishes him the very best in his future endeavors.
As a debut team in the ZPL Super League, We are confident that Coach Tambo’s experience and leadership will be key in guiding the team forward.
Coach Tembo brings with him vast wealth of experience in the football fraternity, having recently served as Head Coach at Malanti Chiefs in Eswatini , his team emerged as NFD champions of the 2024/2025 champions.
Furthermore he’s also worked as head coach at Manzini Sundowns in Swaziland.
