The Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) has reappointed experienced coach Chris Kaunda as head coach of the Zambia Under-17 men’s national team, as preparations begin for a crucial campaign that could lead to qualification for the 2027 FIFA U-17 World Cup.
FAZ confirmed Kaunda’s return on Sunday, entrusting him with guiding the Young Chipolopolo at the upcoming COSAFA Under-17 Championship, which serves as the qualification tournament for the TotalEnergies CAF Under-17 Africa Cup of Nations.
Success at the continental tournament would secure Zambia a place at the 2027 FIFA U-17 World Cup.
Experienced Technical Bench Named
Kaunda will be assisted by Dennis Makinka, who has been appointed assistant coach, while Dabwitso Nkhoma will serve as second assistant coach.
Former Chipolopolo striker Collins Mbesuma has joined the technical bench as strikers’ coach, with former Zambia international Joshua Titima taking charge of the goalkeepers.
The remainder of the backroom staff includes Clive Hichilensa (fitness coach), Nathan Sinkala (equipment manager), Matambo Lukhanda (team manager) and Keith Mulamba (security officer).
The medical team will be led by Dr Emmanuel Kanswe and Isaac Sichali, while 2012 AFCON-winning midfielder Rainford Kalaba has been appointed team ambassador, where he will provide mentorship and inspiration to the country’s next generation of footballers.
FAZ Targets AFCON and World Cup Qualification
FAZ General Secretary Charles Chakatazya said the early appointment of the technical bench was intended to provide enough time for preparations ahead of the team’s upcoming assignments.
“The appointment of the U17 technical bench is meant to give them room to start preparations for forthcoming assignments. We are confident that the experience that coach Kaunda brings to the table will re-energise the team,” Chakatazya said.
He added that qualifying for the Africa Cup of Nations and ultimately the FIFA U-17 World Cup remains the association’s primary objective.
“Part of the task of this bench will be to ensure that the team qualifies to the AFCON, which is a gateway to the FIFA World Cup. Having missed out on the 2026 FIFA World Cup, we are determined to qualify for the 2027 edition.”
A Proven Record in Youth Football
Kaunda is one of Zambia’s most accomplished youth coaches and is no stranger to success at Under-17 level.
In 2015, he guided Zambia to its first-ever qualification for the CAF Under-17 Africa Cup of Nations, a landmark achievement in the country’s youth football history.
More recently, he led the Zambia Under-17 side during the 2026 CAF Under-17 Africa Cup of Nations COSAFA Qualifiers, reinforcing FAZ’s confidence in his ability to nurture young talent and build competitive teams.
Focus Turns to COSAFA Championship
With the technical bench now in place, attention shifts to preparations for the upcoming COSAFA Under-17 Championship.
The regional tournament represents the first hurdle on Zambia’s road to the CAF Under-17 Africa Cup of Nations, with qualification for the continental finals offering the opportunity to compete for a place at the 2027 FIFA U-17 World Cup.
Conclusion
The return of Chris Kaunda signals FAZ’s commitment to building on past successes at youth level.
Backed by an experienced technical team featuring former national team stars Collins Mbesuma, Joshua Titima and Rainford Kalaba, the Young Chipolopolo will be aiming to secure qualification for both the CAF Under-17 Africa Cup of Nations and the 2027 FIFA U-17 World Cup.
