The Zambia U-17 National Team started their 2025 U-17 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaign in emphatic fashion, securing a convincing 4-1 victory over Tanzania in their Group A opener. This marks the first time Zambia has won an opening match at the U-17 AFCON, having previously fallen short in 2015 and 2023.
Early Lead Sets the Tone
The Young Copper Bullets wasted no time in making an impact, with captain Jonathan Kalimina firing Zambia into the lead just seven minutes into the match with a spectacular long-range strike.
Striker Abel Salim Nyirongo doubled Zambia’s advantage with a well-executed close-range volley, capitalizing on a brilliant assist from Nthasilwe Mapulande.
Second-Half Brilliance and VAR Drama
Despite Zambia’s dominance, Tanzania created two clear chances in the second half but failed to convert. The Young Copper Bullets extended their lead in the 80th minute through Mike Mutale, who finished off a Robert Banda cross. The goal was initially disallowed for offside but was later confirmed after a VAR review.
Tanzania managed to pull one back in the 95th minute through Juma Sangwe, but Gabriel Phiri responded instantly, calmly slotting home Zambia’s fourth goal to seal an impressive win.
Zambia Faces Morocco in Crucial Group A Clash
This historic victory puts Ian Bakala’s team in a strong position ahead of their next Group A fixture against hosts Morocco, who dominated Uganda with a 5-0 victory in their opener. The highly anticipated encounter is set for Friday, with Zambia aiming to build on their momentum and secure a place in the knockout stages.
