Quarterfinal Recap: Burkina Faso 6-1 Zambia
Burkina Faso wasted no time asserting their dominance, with Mohamed Fofana breaking the deadlock in the 11th minute. The early setback was compounded ten minutes later when Loukman Tapsoba coolly converted a penalty after a defensive lapse by the Young Chipolopolo.
Despite the double blow, Zambia found hope in the 35th minute as Abel Nyirongo pulled one back with a composed finish. Zambia pushed forward with purpose, dominating possession (60%) and producing 13 shots compared to Burkina Faso’s five. Nyirongo nearly equalized just before halftime but was denied in a crucial one-on-one chance. Nevertheless, Zambia trailed 2-1 at the break, showing plenty of fight.
⚽ Second-Half Collapse and Controversy
The match turned dramatically in the 58th minute when Halidou Diakite capitalized on a defensive miscommunication to make it 3-1. The goal sparked controversy, as Zambian goalkeeper Rogers Simumba appeared to be fouled in the buildup. However, after a lengthy VAR check, the goal stood, further dampening Zambia’s spirits.
Burkina Faso seized full control from there. Diakite bagged his second in the 68th minute, exploiting another defensive lapse. Things unraveled completely when Andrew Mwape was penalized for a foul in the box, allowing Tapsoba to convert his second penalty to make it 5-1.
The rout was sealed in the 90th minute when James Sibeene’s back pass was intercepted by Tapsoba, who completed his hat-trick to cap off a 6-1 demolition.
🇿🇲 Zambia’s AFCON Journey Ends in Casablanca
Though the defeat was a heavy one, Zambia can take immense pride in reaching the U-17 AFCON quarterfinals for the first time in history. Head coach Ian Bakala guided a promising young squad through the group stages and into the knockout round, a significant achievement in itself.
This experience will be invaluable as Zambia now shifts its focus to preparing for the 2025 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Qatar this November—where they’ll be looking to showcase their growth on the global stage.

🇧🇫 Burkina Faso March Into Semifinals Once Again
As for Burkina Faso, this is their fifth time reaching the U-17 AFCON semifinals. The Young Stallions, champions in 2011 and bronze medalists in 2009 and 2023, have once again proven they are a force to be reckoned with at youth level. Their emphatic victory over Zambia sends a strong message to the remaining contenders.
Final Word
While Zambia will rue defensive errors and missed opportunities, their journey at the 2025 U-17 AFCON has laid a solid foundation for the future of youth football in the country. The focus now turns to regrouping, learning, and preparing for the next big challenge: Qatar 2025.
