Russia Coach Karpin: Zambia Has Defensive Problems
Following Russia’s emphatic 5-0 victory over Zambia in an international friendly on March 25 at Dynamo Stadium in Moscow, Russia head coach Valery Karpin commended his team’s efforts while acknowledging Zambia’s weaknesses in defense.
Speaking after the match, Karpin emphasized that while Zambia possesses individually talented players, their defensive frailties were a key factor in Russia’s dominant performance.
“We shouldn’t downplay the victory. Zambia has good football players, individually strong. However, they have problems in defense, which we were able to take advantage of. I’m fully satisfied with our performance,” Karpin stated.
Russia’s Tactical Execution
Karpin credited his players for executing their game plan effectively, noting that Zambia’s struggles to cope with Russia’s attacking movement allowed them to dominate the match.
When asked about Russia’s approach, he explained that the attacking play down the left flank was not pre-planned but rather a result of situational awareness and individual player decisions.
“We didn’t specifically plan to attack from one side, but our players read the game well and took advantage of the spaces Zambia left open,” Karpin added.
Russia’s Record-Breaking Streak
Despite their impressive 44:0 aggregate scoreline over recent matches, Karpin downplayed the significance of the record, insisting that what matters most is the team’s work ethic and execution on the pitch.
“Records and streaks are more for journalists and fans. What makes me happy is not this, but the players’ attitude and dedication, from training to match execution,” he said.
Zambia’s Defensive Concerns Exposed
The defeat raised concerns about Zambia’s defensive organization, as they struggled to contain Russia’s relentless attacks. With the Chipolopolo failing to win a game against a non-African opponent in 14 years, this loss further underscores the need for defensive improvements ahead of future international fixtures.
