Golden Boot winner confident of Nkana resurgence after third-place finish in MTN Super League
After clinching the Golden Boot at the 2024/25 MTN Super League awards, Nkana striker Idris Mbombo has issued a rallying cry to fans and rivals alike—promising a stronger, title-chasing Nkana next season.
The Congolese forward, who scored 13 goals to finish joint top scorer alongside Titus Chansa of Power Dynamos, believes the Kitwe giants are poised for a return to their glory days after years without silverware.
Nkana Hungry for Glory
Nkana, Zambia’s most decorated club with 13 league titles, last lifted the MTN Super League crown in 2020 during the COVID-19 disrupted season. Since then, the iconic club has fallen short of silverware, including a turbulent 2023/24 campaign where they started poorly before finishing third under coach Mwenya Chipepo.
Mbombo, now a cult hero in Kitwe, is optimistic the team’s resurgence is well underway.
“Next season will be a different story,” Mbombo warned. “Better days are coming back at Nkana Stadium.”
A Point to Prove
Reflecting on his personal journey, the striker expressed gratitude to Nkana management and fans who kept faith in him when critics had written him off.
“Thank you to Nkana management for believing in me, when people said Mbombo is finished. They gave me another chance,” said the 28-year-old striker.
“We missed out this season by 10 points, I know it’s football, but next time we’ll work hard. The fans have to come and support us.”
Nkana ended the 2024/25 season behind champions Power Dynamos and second-placed ZESCO United, but Mbombo is confident they can close the gap and challenge for the title next term.

Golden Boot Shared but Hunger Unmatched
Despite sharing the Golden Boot, Mbombo’s 13-goal tally was crucial in Nkana’s strong finish to the campaign. His sharpness in front of goal, combined with Chipepo’s tactical transformation, has given fans hope of a more consistent title push next season.
“Believe me, next season it will be another story,” Mbombo repeated.
