Kundananji Hat-Trick Inspires Copper Queens to 4–2 Away Victory Over Namibia

The Copper Queens took a huge step toward qualification for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) after securing an impressive 4–2 away win over Namibia in Johannesburg. A superb hat-trick from Rachel Kundananji inspired Zambia to a crucial victory in the first leg of the final qualifying round, giving them a strong advantage heading into the return fixture at home.

Zambia got off to a flying start with the attacking trio of Kundananji, Nachula, and Grace Chanda combining beautifully to cause problems for the Brave Gladiators’ defence. The opening goal came in the 13th minute when Eneless Phiri delivered a low cross that Kundananji turned in from close range. Just four minutes later, Rachel Nachula doubled the lead after a clever through ball from Grace Chanda.

The Copper Queens dominated possession and looked sharp going forward, with their pace and movement overwhelming Namibia’s backline. By halftime, Zambia appeared to be in full control, comfortably leading 2–0 and creating several other chances that could have stretched the scoreline further.

Namibia came out stronger in the second half, pressing high and showing more belief. Their persistence paid off in the 52nd minute when Ivon Kooper reduced the deficit with a fine finish. Moments later, Zanetha Coleman equalised from the penalty spot after a defensive lapse by Zambia, bringing the Brave Gladiators back into the game at 2–2.

However, Zambia’s response was emphatic. Kundananji struck again in the 71st minute to restore Zambia’s lead before completing her hat-trick in added time (90+4’) with a composed finish that sealed the 4–2 win. Her clinical display highlighted why she is one of Africa’s most prolific forwards, and her leadership on the pitch proved decisive when Zambia needed composure most.

This crucial away victory gives Zambia a commanding advantage heading into Sunday’s second leg at the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola. The Copper Queens now only need to avoid defeat by more than two goals to secure their place at the 2026 WAFCON in Morocco.

For Coach Nora Häuptle, this result reinforces her team’s attacking quality and resilience. Despite conceding twice, the Copper Queens showed strong character to recover and finish the game in control. The win also extends Zambia’s unbeaten streak against Namibia in competitive matches.

The Copper Queens have taken a major stride towards another WAFCON appearance, and with Rachel Kundananji in such sensational form, the Zambian faithful can look forward to an exciting return leg. The focus now shifts to maintaining discipline and finishing the job on home soil. A strong performance in Ndola could see Zambia officially book their ticket to Morocco 2026.
