FAZ President Mweemba Reaffirms Commitment to Raising Refereeing Standards

Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) President Keith Mweemba has restated his administration’s commitment to uplifting the standards of refereeing in Zambia. Speaking during the second phase of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) training programme, the FAZ boss stressed that improving officiating is central to the development of the game and remains one of his top priorities since assuming office.

Enhancing Welfare and Standards

Mweemba highlighted that his leadership has made deliberate efforts to support match officials. One key milestone was the revision of officiating fees, which he described as “long overdue.” This initiative not only improves the welfare of referees but also ensures that their contribution to the game is recognized and valued.

VAR Training and Zambia’s Continental Role

The ongoing VAR training has enrolled 41 officials, positioning Zambia as a pioneer in African football. The country already boasts referees and instructors with international exposure at COSAFA, AFCON, and FIFA tournaments, including retired FIFA referee Janny Sikazwe, Gladys Lengwe, Bernard Chabala, Oliver Mweene, and Bruno Tembo. Mweemba said such experience places Zambia at the forefront of officiating development in the region.

Broader Growth in Zambian Football

The FAZ president also linked the VAR initiative to wider progress in Zambian football. He noted that the introduction of new broadcast deals would open more partnerships, creating opportunities to modernize the domestic game. Support from COSAFA, CAF, and FIFA remains vital in accelerating the integration of VAR into the MTN Super League.

Innovation and Accessibility

Mweemba applauded innovators who are working on more user-friendly VAR technology, emphasizing that such advancements reduce reliance on heavy equipment and make training more accessible. He urged participants to maximize the opportunity, noting that few African countries have access to such specialized training.

Conclusion

FAZ President Keith Mweemba concluded by thanking COSAFA, CAF, and FIFA for their continued support. He reassured stakeholders that his administration is determined to raise the bar in officiating across all levels of Zambian football, making refereeing a cornerstone of the country’s sporting progress.
