Copper Queens seek to outshine Namibia in AWCON qualifier
THE Zambia National Soccer Team (female side), fondly known as the Copper Queens, will this afternoon face-off with Namibia at Nkoloma Stadium in Lusaka.
This is a 2022 Africa Women Cup of Nations (AWCON) qualifier match. The Africa Women Cup of Nations is a biennial tournament and this year’s will be the 12th edition. The
The Copper Queens, who are coached by Bruce Mwape, beat South Africa’s Banyana Banyana 3-0 in a friendly match at Nkoloma Stadium on Saturday, February 12.
Today’s encounter between Zambia and Namibia is the first leg and the overall winner over the two legs will qualify to the AWCON. In October last year, Zambia and Malawi played to a 1 all draw in the 2022 AWCON qualifier first leg match at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe, Malawi.
That was the first round, first leg fixture and in the return leg – still in October last year –the Copper Queens beat Malawi 3 – 2 in Lusaka.
The Copper Queens qualified to the next round of the 2022 AWCON qualifiers after edging Malawi 4-3 on aggregate, thereby setting up a meeting with Namibia in the final round.
