Copper Queens Keep COSAFA Semi-Final Dream Alive with Victory Over Angola

The Copper Queens have reignited their hopes of advancing to the semi-finals of the 2023 COSAFA Women’s Championship with a convincing 3-1 win against Angola. The Zambian national women’s team, led by coach Bruce Mwape, entered the match determined to secure a victory after their frustrating goalless draw against Mozambique in their tournament opener.

Zambia wasted no time asserting their dominance, as Susan Jere capitalized on a goalkeeper error just three minutes into the game, slotting the ball into the net to score her first goal of the tournament. The lead was further extended in the 20th minute when Jackline Nkole unleashed a sensational strike, assisted by Eneless Phiri, making it 2-0 for Zambia going into halftime.

In the second half, the Copper Queens continued to display their fine form, determination, and composure. Susan Jere added to her tally with her second goal of the game, making it 3-0 for Zambia. Despite Zambia’s strong lead, Angola managed to pull one back, with Sara Luvunga scoring a consolation goal. Zambia’s goalkeeper, Leticia Lungu, found herself in an unfortunate situation as she palmed the ball into her own net, allowing Angola to get on the scoreboard.

With this victory, the defending champions, Zambia, have boosted their chances of securing a spot in the semi-finals. They now await their final group-stage opponent, Comoros, who will face Mozambique. Only the group winners will secure an automatic spot in the semi-finals, with the best-performing second-placed team from the three groups also advancing.

The Copper Queens will be eager to defend their title and continue their journey in the Southern African Regional tournament as they keep their semi-final dreams alive.
