Copper Queens Defeated by USA 3-0 in Group B Opener
The Zambia Women’s national team suffered a 3-0 defeat to the USA in their Group B opening fixture on Thursday. The match, held as part of the tournament’s group stage, saw the American team dominate with an early lead and a quickfire brace.
The USA took the lead in the 17th minute with a well-taken goal by Trinity Rodman. Just minutes later, Mallory Swanson hit a quickfire brace, scoring twice within a minute to increase their advantage. The situation worsened for Zambia when defender Pauline Zulu was sent off before the half-hour mark, reducing the Copper Queens to ten players.
In response to the challenging first half, Zambia’s coach Bruce Mwape made a triple substitution before the break. Aveil Chitundu came on to replace Prisca Chilufya, while Grace Chanda, who started in a holding role, was substituted for Esther Muchinga. The tactical changes aimed to stabilize the team and mitigate the impact of being a player down.
After the break, Zambia adopted a more defensive approach, playing in a low block with Barbra Banda positioned as a lone striker. Racheal Kundananji shifted to a more central attacking midfield role, aiming to create opportunities despite the numerical disadvantage.
The Copper Queens will look to bounce back in their next match against Australia on Sunday, 28 July 2024. With lessons learned from the defeat to the USA, Zambia’s focus will be on regrouping and preparing for a stronger performance in their upcoming fixture.
Match Summary
- FULL-TIME: USA 3-0 Zambia
- Goals: Trinity Rodman (17’), Mallory Swanson (24’, 25’)
- Red Card: Pauline Zulu (Zambia)
Coach Bruce Mwape acknowledged the challenges faced by his team but expressed confidence in their ability to recover and perform better in the next match. “It was a tough game, especially after going down to ten players. We will analyze our performance and make necessary adjustments for the match against Australia,” Mwape said.
