Chipolopolo Qualify for AFCON 2025 with Game to Spare
In a historic moment for Zambian football, the Chipolopolo boys have secured their place in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Ivory Coast. The win, achieved in front of a packed Levy Mwanawasa Stadium, saw Zambia clinch top spot in Group G with ten points after five games, ensuring qualification with a match still to play. Ivory Coast, the defending champions, trail close behind in second with nine points from five games.
The game began with both sides adopting a cautious approach, each looking to avoid early mistakes. However, Zambia found their breakthrough in the 43rd minute when Kennedy Musonda struck, sending the home crowd into a frenzy. The forward’s goal proved to be the decisive moment, securing Zambia’s back-to-back AFCON qualification—a first for the team in nearly a decade.
The second half saw Ivory Coast pressing aggressively for an equalizer. Despite the pressure, Zambia’s defense held firm, showcasing both resilience and tactical discipline. Chipolopolo’s Joseph Sabobo Banda nearly doubled the lead, missing a promising chance, while Kings Kangwa’s unselfish play nearly set up Clatous Chota Chama for a second goal. The game ended in dramatic fashion when Ivory Coast’s Issouf Bayo thought he’d found the equalizer in the 89th minute, only to have his goal ruled out for offside.

The qualification marks a new chapter for the Chipolopolo, who have shown renewed confidence and cohesion under the current coaching setup.
As they prepare for their final qualifying game, the team will look to maintain their momentum and build on their recent successes. With a solid squad, growing fan support, and a deep sense of national pride, Zambia’s journey to the 2025 AFCON promises to be an exciting one.
