Ashos Melu, affectionately known as “Super Ash” for his exceptional dribbling skills and powerful shots, was born on June 6, 1957, in Chililabombwe. Growing up in this mining town, Melu developed a passion for football, which would eventually take him to the pinnacle of success.
Melu’s early days were marked by his versatility, as he played amateur boxing while attending Chililabombwe Secondary School. However, it was football that truly captured his heart. He began his professional career as a striker for Konkola Blades, signing his first top-flight contract before moving to Mufulira Wanderers in the late 1970s.
During his time at Mufulira Wanderers, Melu played alongside notable players like Kalusha Bwalya, Charles Musonda, and Gibby Mbasela. In 1983, he became the top goal scorer in the Zambian top-tier league and won the Zambian Footballer of the Year award. Melu’s impressive performance earned him a reputation as a skilled and formidable player.
In a surprising turn of events, Melu transitioned to defense under the guidance of coach Samuel Zoom Ndhlovu in 1986. This move proved to be a success, as Melu went on to win several trophies with Mufulira Wanderers, including the BP Top Eight Cup and the Heroes and Unity Cup.
Melu’s international career took him to Greece, where he played for Olympiacos and Apollon Kalamarias. He also had a stint in Austria with Favoritner AC before retiring in 1992. His national team career was equally impressive, as he was part of the team that beat Italy 4-0 in the 1988 Seoul Olympics.
After retiring as a player, Melu transitioned into coaching, serving as assistant coach and later head coach of Mufulira Wanderers. He also worked as assistant coach for the Zambia national team under Roald Poulsen. In 1995 and 1996, Melu achieved what he had failed to accomplish as a player by winning back-to-back Zambia Premier League titles with Mufulira Wanderers.
Tragically, Melu’s life was cut short when he fell ill at the start of the 1997 season. His legacy, however, continues to inspire generations of footballers in Zambia and beyond.
